E-cards became popular among webmasters in early 1996 because they could offer e-cards for a very low cost to themselves as a web feature on their site. Popularity of the e-card grew in leaps and bounds with some websites being created exclusively for the purpose of offering e-cards.
While the majority of e-cards are still free to send, there are many sites now that you must pay membership to send their e-cards. Some charge a fee for premium e-cards they offer.
