July 25, 2008, Newsletter Issue #72: Salutations for Religious, Military, and Dignitary Professionals

1

Tip of the Week

Professionals in religious, military and dignitary fields are addressed differently from non-professionals and physicians.

When addressing someone of military or religious affiliation, always spell out their title. Sister, Father, Professor and Colonel are all examples of this.

Many dignitaries, including senators, governors, mayors and representatives are addressed as "The Honorable" with their first and last name following this title. However, it is perfectly acceptable to write Sir or Madam. You can even use the word "Dear" followed by their title and last name.

Be sure you know what the professional prefers as their title. This will keep you from having any embarrassing moments or from possibly offending someone.
