July 18, 2008, Newsletter Issue #71: Concerning Salutations

Tip of the Week

There are certain rules to follow when thinking of salutations to include in a letter or greeting card. You may be wondering when you should use a professional title or how to address a married couple. These questions and more will be answered below.

If the recipient of the greeting card or letter has a professional title, such as Dr. or Professor, it is best to use that title and their last name.If the recipient does not have a professional title, it is appropriate to address a male as Mr. and a female as Miss, Mrs. or Ms., depending on her marital status. When addressing a couple in a greeting card or letter you would use both Mr. and Mrs. then the husband's first and last name. If the letter or greeting card is not formal it is OK to use just first names inside the card, but use the proper salutation on the envelope.Whenever possible it is best to know what the card recipient prefers to be addressed as. Knowing this will help you decide which salutation is best for your purpose.
